Is there a peace process in the Middle East?
At a seminar on Palestine, two Israeli peace activists, one Palestinian peace activist and the Palestinian politician Dr Mustafa Barghouthi discussed the future of Palestine and the role of the international community for peace.
”There is a misinterpretation between us and you” said Dr Mustafa Barghouthi at the seminar the 20th of September at the European Social Forum in Malmö.
“There is one narrative trying to sell us the idea that there is a peace process going on and that it will lead to an outcome. Since the Annapolis peace conference started in 2007, the settlements have increased, multiplied with 38. The military check points have increased from 125 to 620. 3400 more people have been arrested. 521 Palestinians have been killed after the peace process, including 96 children. In the last month, there have been no violent acts at all from the Palestinian side, but still people are being shot by the Israeli military at the peaceful demonstrations in Bil’in” (a small village on the west bank).
Angela Godfrey Goldstein, Israeli peace activist, said, “It is today almost impossible to keep track on all the displacements of Palestinians. Even the World Bank and IMF are critical to the situation. “
“We are reduced from human beings to numbers by the media” said Dr Mustafa.
“The Annapolis peace process eliminates the right for the 5 million Palestinian refugees to return. Jerusalem, where both Israeli and Palestinian live, is not even negotiated at the peace process.” Dr Mustafa said.
“You have been told that the Israeli will accept 93% of the West bank to Palestinians, but 93% out of what? They do not accept Jerusalem, the Jordan valley, nor the Dead Sea in the 100% of today’s west bank, which leaves us with less than 60% of the west bank. 93% of 60% is little more than 50%. The land Israel want contains 80% of the water resources in the west bank. “ Dr Mustafa said.
“When we talk about security, its important to ask oneself: security for whom? Does the security include the security for Palestinians? In security, do we include social and economic security? “ said Dr Mustafa.
“First task of solidarity is to demand and pressure the media to show the reality, the right narrative.” Said Dr Mustafa.
“There is another misunderstanding between us and you; that because of diversity and inner conflict there is no possibility of a peace process. There is a silent movement in Palestine, a middle way, who want a national unity, the Palestinian National Initiative is one new party for peace. Its wrong to think that all in Palestine is Hamas or Fattah. Palestine had good democratic elections, the national unity government (2007) was not accepted by the international community. The only two foreign ministers in the world who continued working with Palestine during that time were Norway and Sweden. “ said Dr Mustafa Barghouthi.
“A second task of solidarity is to accept Palestinians as human beings, entitled to human rights, democracy and duties.” Said Dr Barghouthi.
